At 46, I went back to school. After starting two master’s programs that never quite fit, I finally found one that did. This Master’s in Leadership connected directly to my real-life work in finance at a medical school, making everything I learned immediately applicable. In my next-to-last class, I suffered a stroke after a routine surgery. Thanks to an incredibly supportive instructor, I was able to keep going despite the setback. I did all of this while raising two teenage boys and juggling life with three dogs. This degree is proof that it’s never too late to finish what you start—especially when it finally feels right.

Being a full time career/student/father always has many challenges. Trying to balance work/school/kids can bring on lots of challenges to continue going to school. Completing my degree was one of the hardest and most meaningful things I’ve ever done. I pushed through two high-risk pregnancies that left me hospitalized, while working full time for the Oklahoma Army National Guard and raising my family. I started this journey during COVID and endured three newborn stages, a move, a government shutdown, and times when my children were sick or hospitalized. Many nights I studied exhausted and alone while my husband worked night shift, caring for our children and supporting me however he could. There were moments I wanted to quit, but my children were my why. This degree represents resilience, sacrifice, and choosing not to give up.
